Real Wedding: Hermès and Camille’s Downton Abbey-Inspired Wedding

If French bride Camille Lesou had it her way, she’d travel back in time to the early 1900s to marry her beau Hermès Clement in a traditional high-necked sheath gown, long satin gloves and floor-length veil, just like the characters from her fave Brit TV drama Downton Abbey.

Taking a leaf from the show, Camille sourced for a Roaring Twenties-inspired gown from Parisian designer Laure de Sagazan. “This French hand-made confection has a very refined vintage style with plunging back made with Calais lace. It was befitting of the pastoral chic theme you see in Downton Abbey,” explains Camille. She paired the short-sleeved slinky creation with strappy silver heels from Jimmy Choo and a Boho floral crown made by Minini. “I wanted a headpiece like the brides of Eastern Europe to remind me of my time spent studying in Slovakia.”

The couple tied the knot in a civil ceremony in the morning followed by a traditional church ceremony in Dijon (capital city of Burgundy) – the same place Camille’s parents married 28 years ago. “To liven the atmosphere, I got two friends – and opera singer and organ player – to perform a few songs like Mozart’s Laudate Dominum,” she reveals.

After tying the knot with a kiss and walk under a confetti shower, the couple proceeded to their very own abbey – Château de Saulon in Saulon-la-Rue – riding in a classic1961 Pontiac for added vintage effect! “We visited a lot of castles in Burgundy and this one had everything we wanted: old style charm, a huge park with a grassy green environment, a river, plus an in-house a caterer. Also, we had many friends coming from other parts of France and abroad, so we needed to provide them accommodation, and this venue is also an hotel, so it was a pure happiness to have everybody all night with us, sleeping at the same hotel and having brunch all together the next morning!”

Using decorative lawn animals and slouchy bean bags, the garden evoked a whimsical atmosphere and proved to be a hit with the kids, while the adults indulged in cocktails and canapes at the chateau’s courtyard. As the sun set, the couple hosted an outdoor reception under a spacious marquee decorated in pristine white filled with a variety of ivory blooms and candles, contrasted by a ceiling of pastel-coloured paper lanterns.

Hermès and Camille entered the dining hall to a sea of lit sparklers and took to the dance floor to perform the tango which they learnt over 4 lessons. The evening was littered with candid speeches, delicious nosh and more dancing all night! “The wedding was everything we imagined … the nicest day of our lives by far. Wish it didn’t happen so quickly!” she laughs.

The couple credits their wedding planner Elodie Lepont-Jubin of Bulles & Compagnie for the successful event. A leading wedding planning company in Burgundy,  Bulles & Compagnie has helped organise more than 150 weddings since conception 7 years ago.
