Singapore-born, Melbourne-based Natalie Ong became an overnight success after she made headlines as a Top 12 finalist on reality singing competition The X Factor Australia last year. Then 15, Natalie had competed in the Under-22 category and won hearts over with her powerful and sultry voice.
Even though she was booted out of the competition after its first live show, her exit from X Factor heralded the start of a promising career in the entertainment industry. “I’ve always loved singing, but it was only when I was 12 or 13 when I really wanted to become a singer!”,” shares Natalie, whose doting parents are supportive of her endeavours. Yearly visits back to our little red dot for family reunions became bustling monthly affairs as the vocal powerhouse started scoring back-to-back gigs in Singapore.
In June, the 16-year-old headlined the Uncharted concert at the Esplanade Recital Studio together with UK-born, Singapore-based rapper, REQ, and Filipino singer, Yeng Constantino. Organised by music school Academy Of Rock and music studio AOR Studios, the show was part of Singapore Street Festival.
In the same month, she released her debut single, Get Gold, an empowering R&B/electronic-pop track created in collaboration with homegrown musician/producer, Josh Wei, for Shine Festival, a popular youth event. Held from Jun 30 to July 2, the festival also saw Natalie perform a duet alongside K-pop star, Jessica Jung. How many 16-year-olds can say they’ve done that?
