Denise Camillia Tan: Local TV’s Newest Sweetheart
While Mediacorp artiste, Denise Camillia Tan, may not be a household name in Singapore yet, the former fashion design student’s extensive portfolio will surprise many.
At 19, the Malaysian beauty was crowned Miss Astro Chinese 2012, and was the first runner up of the Miss Chinese International Pageant in 2013. She signed with Malaysian broadcaster Astro not long after, and appeared in a couple of Malaysian and Hong Kong productions, including The Hiddens (2016).
Even though Denise is new to local television (she was signed to The Celebrity Agency five months ago), the budding starlet already has a healthy number of dramas under her belt.
She is currently filming upcoming Ch 8 drama, Mind Matters, where she plays a character suffering from mental illness, and has also appeared in several other dramas including Legal Eagles, Have A Little Faith, and While We Were Young.
sXs: Tell us what it’s like acting alongside veterans such as Hong Huifang, Zoe Tay and Felicia Chin in the past few months.
DT: The working culture in Singapore is very different compared to Malaysia – the filming schedule here is really tight. However, my co-stars have taught me how to cope with the pressure. That's why I also appreciate the production team – everything involves tight coordination and team work. It’s not easy, but I definitely enjoy the process.
sXs: We’re glad to hear that. Any memorable experiences so far?
DT: I had to dance and appear graceful under the blazing sun for Mind Matters, and the heat was really unbearable. But when we watched the playback, I felt that my effort was worth it! I can't wait to see the final edit.
sXs: Any particular roles you’d love to play?
DT: I've always secretly wanted to be in action dramas or movies that involve stunts, as well as roles that can stretch my limits. I like new challenges, and I'm open to work with any artiste as I feel that the diversity of work styles and ideas will help improve my craft.
