Ask sXs: Jewellery-Shopping For Your Other Half
No need to lose beauty sleep over this. It's not as difficult as you think. Jewellery designer Joanne Low shows you how.
There's ample to celebrate this time of the year. Birthdays (so many of them!), Christmas (it's never too early) and anniversaries. If you find yourself losing beauty sleep at night wondering what to get for your other half, don't. Dark eye circles and testiness are not worth it. Besides, you know we always have your interest at heart. This week, we ask Joanne Low (below), designer and founder of jewellery label Joanne L for some expert opinion on how to choose a nice, glittery gift. (Click on individual items to shop!)
Joanne Low: I love anniversaries — particularly those of the romantic kind! Anniversaries are a great opportunity to celebrate love, and it doesn’t hurt to give or, better yet, receive a little momento of this special annual occasion (especially if the gift is of a glittery nature and brings squeals of delights).
Yet, choosing the right gift is not as easy as one would hope and certainly not a task to be taken lightly. Although there are traditional gifts associated with different anniversaries, there is no rule that requires one to abide by such traditions. For those looking for something other than the usual gifts, fret not. Help is here (in the jewellery department at least)!
Gifts for Him
For the boardroom professional, cufflinks are a great option. If his office culture allows, ace this gift with something playful yet unique like these steel plated Playing Card Cufflinks from Paul Smith. For an environment which calls for more formal threads, choose a monochrome version and play with shapes instead, like these Steering Wheel Silver Cufflinks from Alfred Dunhill — a sure hit with car lovers.
Leather bracelets are currently all the rage and great for men who love the feel of skin against their own. However, for a gift that will speak volumes of your thoughtfulness and will last him through the years, try a personalised silver ID necklace or ID bracelet instead. Have the store engrave your names or perhaps a meaningful phrase or message on the tag of the bracelet or necklace.
Gifts for Her
Few women can resist jewellery. For anniversaries and especially when the choice of what to buy rests purely on the man, I usually advise my gentlemen clients to choose classic pieces which their lady love can wear through the seasons. Classic, however, need not be boring.
This 18K rose-gold Arrow Bracelet from Anita Ko will certainly remind her of the arrow from Cupid who brought you together, and who can say "no" to interlinked bangles which mirror your intertwined lives? Certainly not me.
But if these options don’t quite grab you, take comfort — a little bling for that finger has never hurt.
Hopefully you’ve found some inspiration for your next anniversary purchase and remember — be creative. All that glitters doesn’t always have to be gold.
